Resource on modular model railroads

Looking through my web traffic reports last week, I noticed a number of referrals from modular-model-railroads.com. Turns out that the site mentions my humble eisenbahnstudio blog in their articles entitled In search of the Ultimate module and Module Weblogs. I would like to thank the guys from Modular Model Railroads and reciprocate the link.

The site is a growing resource on modular and sectional model railroad building and offers many useful how-tos, information on benchwork, module clubs, links to photo galleries and YouTube videos. If you are interested in learning more about FREMOdules and other modular systems or would like to become a contributor, pay them a visit.

Searching Hp1 magazine

While unpacking the boxes from our overseas move which arrived a week ago, I naturally came across my collection of Willy Kosak’s Hp1 Eisenbahnmodellbau heute. I filed them neatly in our brand new IKEA shelf  and realized later that there was one thing about the magazine, I forgot to mention in my recent You’ve got mail post: Willy Kosak offers a feature on his website that lets you search the archives of Hp1 magazine.*

With this neat tool, you don’t have to spend a lot of time leafing through past issues to find an article or track plan you want to look up. Simply entering a keyword will return entries listing category, title of the feature, issue and page number. The search functionality is somewhat limited, as it seems to only spot keywords in the title of articles. So a few tries with broad search terms may be necessary to find what you are looking for. A query for the word “FREMO” for instance returned the suspiciously low count of two results.

As the number of magazines increases over time, I think that indexing of the articles’ contents would be a great way to make this feature even more convenient.

*Please note that this link takes you directly to the archive page without the frame set. If you want to see the page in context, visit www.h0pur.de and click on “Magazin” in the top navigation of the site.

You’ve got mail

Yesterday, I received my first copy of Willy Kosak’s Hp1 Eisenbahnmodellbau heute since moving to this side of the Atlantic. The magazine was mailed in a sturdy outer envelope and survived its maiden voyage without any blemishes.

The publication is of superb print quality and features Kosak’s beautifully set model photos – even though some seem excessively photoshopped. With its many helpful modeling tips, it serves as the quasi trade journal among PROTO:87 fans in German-speaking countries and beyond.

I knew that FREMO:87 was going to be featured prominently in the latest issue, but I had no idea how extensive the coverage was going to be. The article comprises 14 pages of photographs of FREMO:87 members, their beautiful rolling stock and modules plus an additional seven pages of feature content – and even more pictures – including an inspirational history of FREMO:87 authored by FREMO veteran Klaus Weibezahn.

Kudos to Willy Kosak and his crew – hopefully, the piece will motivate fellow model railroaders to become active members of FREMO:87.
